What to wear to Chukka

Chukka has a dress code, and the ATV needs a document most people leave in the hotel safe. Get those two right and the rest of the packing for a zipline, tubing or ATV day is easy.

You will sit in a zipline harness, drive through mud, climb on a horse and swim in the sea, all in one day. Clothes that work for all of that are simple, but the rules are strict about shoes and tops.

The quick answer

Chukka's dress code is a full-length T-shirt or tank top, shorts or active pants, and closed-toe shoes (sneakers or closed-toe water shoes). Wear a swimsuit underneath, and bring your physical driver's licence for the ATV, a photo ID, a towel, a change of clothes, sunscreen and a card plus some cash.

What is Chukka's dress code?

A full-length tank top or T-shirt, shorts or active pants, and closed-toed shoes.

A crop top is not full-length, so pack a proper T-shirt or tank top. Leggings or quick-dry shorts are the most comfortable under a zipline harness.

Which shoes should you wear?

Sneakers or closed-toe water shoes; closed-toe shoes are mandatory at Chukka.

Water shoes are the best all-rounder: they grip on the ATV pegs, survive the sea on the horse swim and dry on the bus home. Flip-flops and sandals are not allowed for the activities.

Should you wear a swimsuit?

Yes, under your clothes: the horseback ride and swim, snorkelling, the catamaran and the pool all get you wet.

Changing rooms are available at Chukka, but arriving with your swimsuit on saves queueing time.

What documents do you need?

Your physical driver's licence if you want to drive an ATV or dune buggy, and a valid photo ID for check-in.

This is the item people forget most. Without a licence you cannot drive, though you may still ride as a dune buggy passenger if you meet the height rule.

How much money should you bring?

Enough for lunch, drinks, a $10 locker, the $10 bamboo raft if you want it, photos and tips; carry a card as well as cash.

One guest could not pay for photos in cash, so do not rely on cash alone. Small bills are handy for tips on every tour.

Wet activities: wear the swimsuit, lock up the wallet.

What should you leave behind?

Valuables you do not need, loose jewellery and hats that can fly off on the zipline; and skip alcohol if you plan to drive.

Lockers cost $10 at Chukka. A waterproof phone pouch on a lanyard is the easiest way to take photos on the water.

What should you wear for river tubing?

A swimsuit, water shoes and a T-shirt or rash vest; bring a towel, sunscreen, a hat and a change of clothes.

That is close to the operators' own list for the Bamboo Beach Club trip. The Rio Bueno trip includes no food, so pack a snack or cash for the beach. See river tubing from Montego Bay.

How do you protect yourself from the sun?

Reef-safe sunscreen applied before you leave, sunglasses with a strap, and a cap for the bus and the beach.

Reapply after the catamaran and the horse swim. Drink water through the day: the Jamaican sun and a day of activity add up fast.
